Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best ways to improve stamina, body composition, and overall physical fitness. BJJ is a great workout alternative to traditional resistance or cardio workouts for various reasons.
First, it is inherently social. One cannot practice BJJ alone, so your training partners become your fitness partners and support group. It is a built-in network to help each other stay accountable for getting to the gym. The BJJ community is a group of like-minded people who want to improve themselves mentally AND physically. This will be an enormous benefit to your fitness journey.
Second, it is functional. While traditional weightlifting is locked into four broad categories of motion- pressing (chest), pulling (back), squat variations (legs), and overhead press variations (shoulders)- BJJ is dynamic. It almost always requires a simultaneous push/pull movements that create the leverage necessary for applying techniques. At our gym, new students will experience improved core strength and balance as a result.
Third, BJJ combines aerobic (low-intensity long duration) and anaerobic (high-intensity short duration) training for fat loss. The aerobic component of BJJ includes warm-up, drilling techniques, and light grappling. Whereas the shorter duration, high-intensity anaerobic movements are the rapid bursts of energy sometimes needed to gain the superior position during more competitive grappling in our advanced classes. Combining these two elements together with effort and discipline, a lower resting heart rate and fat loss are very achievable goals.
Lastly, it is human chess. One common theme among students who choose BJJ over traditional gym workouts or running is they feel those activities can become boring. Lifting an inanimate weight or running laps around the neighborhood still leaves room for the mind to wander, to continue thinking about pressing problems. There is nothing pushing back. On the other hand, in BJJ, you have a living, breathing training partner in front of you. You may have an idea of how you want to outmaneuver them in grappling, but they have other plans. They push back. They respond to your movements in unexpected ways. This chess-like maneuvering forces you to focus on the person in front of you and the task at hand. Which in turn leads to improved mental fitness and the ability to deal with life’s challenges in a relaxed state of mind.
